The tradeoff is cost. Closed-cell spray foam runs more than fiberglass per square foot, and it requires a professional applicator with the right equipment. For climate-controlled commercial buildings, aviation hangars, or any application where air sealing is as important as insulation, the performance difference justifies the price. It is also one of the few insulation types that can be applied effectively to an existing steel building as a retrofit, sprayed directly against the interior of the panels.
Open-cell spray foam has a lower R-value than closed-cell, around R-3.5 per inch, and it is not a vapor barrier. Moisture passes through it. In dry climates or interior applications where a separate vapor barrier is installed, open-cell foam provides effective insulation at a lower cost than closed-cell. It also performs well acoustically, reducing sound transmission through the panels.
Open-cell foam is not the right choice for livestock buildings, high-humidity environments, or any application where moisture management is a primary concern. Without a separate vapor barrier, it can absorb moisture and undermine the insulation assembly over time.
Rigid board insulation, typically extruded polystyrene (XPS) at R-5 per inch or polyisocyanurate (polyiso) at R-6 to R-6.5 per inch, is most effective as a continuous layer that addresses the thermal bridging problem directly. Installed between the girts and the exterior panels, rigid board creates a thermal break that prevents the steel frame from conducting heat directly to the exterior.
Under-slab rigid board is also standard practice on any conditioned or semi-conditioned steel building, insulating the concrete from the ground beneath it. This is often left out of insulation conversations but matters significantly for buildings where comfortable working conditions during winter are part of the design intent.
DripStop is not thermal insulation. It does not add R-value. What it does is prevent condensation from dripping inside non-climate-controlled buildings.
